Timestamp and timezone bugs developers keep repeating

Debug Unix timestamps, local time, UTC offsets, DST boundaries, and off-by-one-day errors in apps and APIs.

Time bugs are frustrating because the same value can look correct in one timezone and wrong in another. Unix timestamps, ISO strings, local dates, and database timestamps all carry different assumptions.

The debugging goal is to identify the exact representation and timezone at every boundary.

Seconds vs milliseconds

Unix timestamps may be expressed in seconds or milliseconds. JavaScript `Date.now()` returns milliseconds, while many APIs and databases use seconds.

A 13-digit value interpreted as seconds points far into the future. A 10-digit value interpreted as milliseconds points near 1970.

Dates without timezones are ambiguous

A date like `2026-05-15` may mean midnight UTC, midnight local time, or a calendar date without a specific instant. APIs should document which meaning they expect.

Off-by-one-day bugs often happen when a local date is converted to UTC and displayed in another timezone.

DST makes duration math dangerous

Adding 24 hours is not always the same as adding one calendar day in a timezone with daylight saving transitions.

For scheduling, store instants in UTC and store the user's timezone separately when the calendar meaning matters.

A practical workflow

Start by writing down the exact input, the system that produced it, and the system that will consume the result. For time work, this small note prevents a common mistake: treating a copied sample as if it has no context. Logs, browser consoles, CI output, API clients, and database exports all change how values are escaped, truncated, or displayed.

Next, run the smallest possible check before transforming anything. If the value is JSON, parse it before formatting. If it is a URL, split it into components before encoding. If it is a token, decode and inspect the header before trusting the payload. Review checklist before using the result

Check the variant first. In time tasks, the same visible value can have multiple meanings depending on where it came from. A token can be decoded but unverified, a timestamp can be seconds or milliseconds, a URL can be structurally valid but incorrectly encoded, and a formatted document can still violate the target schema.

Check the boundary second. Browser display, API request bodies, HTML attributes, shell commands, database fields, and CI configuration files all have different escaping rules. If the output crosses a boundary, confirm that the receiving system expects exactly that representation.

Check sensitive data last. Remove secrets, private customer data, access tokens, and production keys from examples before sharing them. Prefer browser-local tools for pasted snippets and server-backed tools only when network access is required for the task.

The goal is not to turn every small task into ceremony. It is to recognize the moment when a quick inspection becomes evidence for a production decision. That is where a short note, saved fixture, or automated check prevents the same small bug from returning later.

Normalize timestamps at system boundaries, keep timezone intent explicit, and test around DST changes instead of only current dates.
